Walking Closer with God

Clayton Valley Church 50th Anniversary - Memory Wall

5

In 1964 Pastor Bill Herzog along with three families gathered together on this side of Concord in order to begin a new church. They began meeting in the Farm Bureau building on Clayton Rd. and later were given the opportunity to purchase a 2 acre lot on Michigan Blvd.

Today in 2014 we celebrate the legacy of those believers who had the vision, endurance and faith to make - and keep - Clayton Valley Church a reality though the years. Our God is faithful, good, all-powerful and all-wise. Most of all we celebrate His faithfulness, His persistence, His blessing and His work among us.

This month we are holding a church-wide birthday party of sorts, and we need your help to make our celebration complete. Whether you have been at CVC for only five days or all fifty years, we want to hear your story. What has been the biggest blessing to you? To your family? Maybe your CVC story is funny, or just a little bit sad. Whatever the details, please share your CVC story with us so we can post it here on our memory wall. We would love to hear about how the Lord has worked in your life through this church family. Use the comment box below to get your story in. Be sure to include: Your Name, Years at CVC, Your Story.  Thanks!

Our family first started going to CVC in 1965 or '66. I was little so I don't remember exactly. What I do remember is sitting in those metal folding chairs in the Farm Bureau Hall with my Dad, Chuck McCoin, and hearing the most amazing story being told by Pastor Herzog. When it was over, Pastor said something about asking Jesus into our heart. I didn't really understand it completely, but Dad did. When I saw Dad go forward I thought, "if it's good enough for my Dad then it's good enough for me!" and practically RAN down the aisle to be with Dad and learn more about this Jesus. Mrs. Herzog took me into the kitchen, explained to me about being saved, and prayed with me to accept Jesus. Shortly after, Dad and I were baptized. Dad passed away this summer. I miss him terribly! But I'll be forever grateful for him taking us to church that day; forever blessed that we shared a "birthday"; and totally at peace knowing that he is with Jesus and I WILL see him again. I imagine he and Pastor and Billie are having a wonderful time together with Jesus.

There are so many memories: Billie talking me into singing with Nanci Austin (I miss her too!)and Donna Herzog; hiking Mt. Diablo with the youth group and Pastor Herzog to get mistletoe; spook houses in the unfinished basement of the church; youth rallies at other churches. I left the area in 1975, but those memories, and many others have stayed with me.

Hello to all who may remember me and my family. Dad tried to hang on longer so he could be at this celebration, or at least record a video message to you all. However, I'm sure you'll all agree that we'd not want him to miss the celebration he is having now.

Blessings to you all. May the Lord continue to bless and guide CVC.

Lovingly,
Cheryl (McCoin) Cowan

Our family attended CVC for 11 years and there are more stories than there is room to tell! This church is warm, loving, kind, and exudes the attributes of a church Christ would want on this earth. We can remember our first Sunday at CVC, when Erik Dietrich greeted us with a warm smile and a laugh. CVC is a family, and it is a family that extends beyond the walls of this church. The Oliveri & Sanders families lead in a graceful, confident, and Christ-centered way. Congratulations of 50 years, and here is to 50 more!

The Apel Family

My son L.G. and I started coming to CVC 6 years ago. We have been blessed to have found CVC a very loving kind church family. Many wonderful memories. My favorite is preparing and delivering meals for our church family "Food Tidings",Back to school give-aways,Jane,sharing our Thanksgiving feast together, ministries sharing,so much more, but my most precious memory is when I was baptized by Pastor Chris 5 years ago.
Thank you Lord most High for bring us to CVC and for bring Pastor Chris here to preach the Gospel and his beautiful family <><

Our family started attending in 1997 mostly because we felt we found a church with strong youth leadership for our two teenagers. What a blessing for them, due to the service of Brian Neuenschwander and Jason Ward. Not only did CVC turn out to be a blessing for them, but the preaching and teaching from Pastor Webb was such a blessing for the entire family. Leadership of Jeff Maitlin was delightful and we were enfolded immediately. Seventeen years later, we are still here and growing under the ministry of Pastor Chris.

I went to "First Baptist Church of Clayton Valley" for the first time 49 years ago. It is the first church I remember as a child.
One memory was of seeing Pastor Herzog put the finishing touches on the exterior of the Ed. wing. Other memories are of Sunday School downstairs and going up and down the stairs. Another memory was at our church wide outing at the roller skating rink in Walnut Creek. I remember Pastor Herzog standing at the concession stand smiling at everyone. I remember thinking "What a nice man."
And yet another memory was of accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord in a Sunday School class in the Ed Wing.
I also came here as a teen when Dean Grotzke was Pastor.
I'm so glad The Lord led me, my husband, and son back here, now "Clayton Valley Church," ten years ago. What a true, loving family of God.
